Over the years, a number of unscrupulous individuals, usually builders, would purchase a set of plans to build one boat, and then proceed to build additional boats to the same design. Sometimes, they simply used the hull form, and designed the rest themselves. Still other times, they would alter the entire design and proceed to market it as an A. Mason-designed boat. The surest sign that a boat is not an authentic A. Mason boat is the number of previous owners the boat had and the short length of each ownership.
